چکیده

Received ; accepted – 2 – ABSTRACT Two ASCA observations were made of two ultra-luminous compact X-ray sources Source 2 showed a 0.5–10 keV luminosity of 6 × 10 39 ergs s −1 (assuming a distance of 4.0 Mpc), and a hard power-law spectrum of photon index ∼ 1.4. As already reported, Source 1 was ∼ 3 times brighter on that occasion, and exhibited a soft spectrum represented by a multi-color disk model of inner-disk temperature ∼ 1.8 keV. The second observation made in February 2000 revealed that Source 1 had made a transition into a hard spectral state, while Source 2 into a soft spectral state. The ULXs are therefore inferred to exhibit two distinct spectral states, and sometimes make transitions between them. These results significantly reinforce the scenario which describes ULXs as mass-accreting black holes.

Spectral variability of Ultra Luminous Compact X-ray Sources in Nearby Spiral Galaxies

Using the X-ray data taken with ASCA, a detailed analysis was made of intensity and spectral variations of three ultra-luminous extra-galactic compact X-ray sources (ULXs); IC 342 source 1, M81 X-6, and NGC 1313 source B, all exhibiting X-ray luminosity in the range 2 × 10–1.5 × 10 erg s−1. As already reported, IC 342 source 1 showed short-term X-ray intensity variability by a factor of 2.0 on ...

XMM - Newton observation of the X - ray point source population of the starburst galaxy IC 342

We present the results of an XMM-Newton observation of the starburst galaxy IC 342. Thirty-seven X-ray point sources were detected down to a luminosity limit of ∼ 10 erg s. Most of the sources are located near the spiral arms. The X-ray point source luminosity function is consistent with a power-law shape with a slope of 0.55, typical of starburst galaxies. We also present the energy spectra of...

The Nature of Ultra-luminous Compact X-ray Sources in Nearby Spiral Galaxies

Studies were made of ASCA spectra of seven ultra-luminous compact X-ray sources (ULXs) in nearby spiral galaxies; M33 X-8 (Takano et al. 1994), M81 X-6 (Fabbiano 1988b; Kohmura et al. 1994; Uno 1997), IC 342 Source 1 (Okada et al. 1998), Dwingeloo 1 X-1 (Reynolds et al. 1997), NGC 1313 Source B (Fabbiano & Trinchieri 1987; Petre et al. 1994), and two sources in NGC 4565 (Mizuno et al. 1999). The X-ray Properties of the Nearby Star-forming Galaxy Ic 342: the Xmm-newton View

We present results on the X-ray properties of IC 342 using a 10 ks XMM-Newton observation. Thirty-five sources are detected coincident with the disk of IC 342 (more than tripling the number known), of which ≈ 31 are likely to be intrinsic to IC 342. This point-source population exhibits a diverse range of spectral properties and has an X-ray luminosity function slope and infrared luminosity com...

State Transitions in Bright Galactic X-ray Binaries: Luminosities Span by Two Orders of Magnitude

Using X-ray monitoring observations with the All Sky Monitor (ASM) on board the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) and the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) on board the Swift, we are able to study the spectral state transitions occurred in about 20 bright persistent and transient black hole and neutron star binaries. We have confirmed that there is a correlation between the X-ray luminosity correspo...
